1 min readFrom Unigraphics to PLM: milestones and practical lessons.
A corrected historical starting point, followed by the distinction that matters today: managing a file is not managing its product context.

Historical milestones
- 1973UNI-GRAPHICS
- 1976McDonnell Douglas acquisition
- 2002Unigraphics NX
- 2007Siemens acquires UGS
Four documented milestones, not a claim that CAD and PLM have a single origin.
Conceptual diagram, not a software screenshot.
This revised note replaces our 2024 PLM overview and Unigraphics summary. The earlier claim that Unigraphics began in 1980 was incorrect. Siemens dates UNI-GRAPHICS to 1973, the McDonnell Douglas acquisition to 1976, Unigraphics NX to 2002 and the Siemens acquisition of UGS to 2007.
What this means for a project today
Our practical takeaway is not a claim that CAD and PLM share a single origin. It is a distinction between creating geometry and managing product decisions. A file can be correct while its revision, assembly use or approval context is wrong.
Ask three questions at handover: which revision owns the document, which occurrence and configuration define its use, and which system owns the approval decision?
